Another feature of computer desks for office use - it’s “reticence” of all the wires. Generally, this involves using double panels, between which the cables and the holes through which the necessary wires are displayed on the desktop.

Special attention is given workplace designer. We can assume that a computer desk designer himself must be a “designer” object. Represents an array of glass and metal. However, much preferable to buy a computer desk made of wood or particleboard. What? What? I am usual man who looks for a method to live well. I believe I will be able to do this soon. I think I will have got that method and then I give it my friends and other people. But I am a sad one now. Why? I don’t know…

USB microwave: one less reason to leave your desk

USB microwave: one less reason to leave your desk

USB microwave: one less reason to leave your desk

So you lead a pretty sedentary lifestyle. You sit in your car on the way to work, you sit at your desk all day, and you sit on your couch all night. Why ruin a good thing by standing up and walking somewhere to get lunch? The BrainWave is a USB-controlled microwave that, in theory, would let you scan an RFID-equipped plastic spoon that would come with specially made meals, telling the microwave just how long to cook it for. Hell, you don’t even need to punch the numbers in! Now that’s conserving energy.Via Yanko Design

Where the magic happens: The desk of writer Alissa Nutting

May 5th, 2010

By Las Vegas Weekly Staff (contact)

Beverly Poppe

A look at author Alissa Nutting’s writing desk.

“My desk is both a prison and an escape,” says Alissa Nutting, a Schaeffer Fellow at UNLV and author of the forthcoming story collection Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls (October, Starcherone Books). “For me, writing as a career is kind of like an insane asylum that I checked myself into voluntarily: I can choose to leave any time, but I never will.” To get behind the scenes of her creative process, we got a glimpse of her workspace.

A close-up shot of the wall behind Alissa Nutting’s desk.

1. “Crime dramas are my ultimate procrastination indulgence. It’s easy to beach myself on the couch in a Snuggie and watch for hours. So I’ve borrowed the good cop/bad cop routine from the show: The bad cop makes sure I get in a minimum number of words, but the good cop gives me the freedom to make them (and my desk) as … crazy as possible.”

2. “I can only write alone, dead sober and in the quiet. To make the process less lonely, I bring in silent animal-statue friends. I’ve experimented with having more human-like dolls on the desk (a ventriloquist dummy’s head, for example), but it was a little creepy, and I kept feeling like I had to ask for their input with the story to be polite.”

3. “As vital as other works of fiction are for inspiration, oftentimes critical texts serve best for getting me out of a writer’s block—it’s a nice gear-shift to thinking about ideas and concepts rather than craft. One of my favorites is M.M. Bakhtin’s The Dialogic Imagination. It talks a lot about the grotesque, the clownish, the carnival; I’m very interested in the things that simultaneously repulse and attract us.”

4. “I like to take traditional concepts or characters and pervert them. Children’s books and toys are often a great inspiration because they have this super-pure facade. I found this very old teddy bear at an antique shop and paid way too much for it, but I had to have it because it looked green and sickly; it’s like a teddy bear who was bitten by a zombie and is in the early stages of transformation. Eventually the face it was making seemed a little sad, a bit “Why haven’t you taken me to the hospital yet?” So I put a lucha libre mask over it.”

The ever popular pedestal desk

May 5th, 2010

The pedestal desk appeared in Britain around the mid 18th century and was traditionally made of mahogany, which had eclipsed walnut at this stage. The style which we know today was made popular through the designs of Thomas Chippendale’s Gentlemen and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, which first appeared in 1754 and the design was copied and adapted by numerous cabinet makers such as Robert Gillow of Lancaster. Unlike most cabinet makers, Gillow used to stamp his work, which makes it readily recognisable.

Although Chippendale only designed furniture, and no examples of pedestal desks from his workshop were actually stamped by him personally, some very grand examples attributed to him remain today. Chippendale collaborated with architect/interior designers such as Robert Adam and as such Chippendale designed furniture became part of the general interiors scheme of large country houses, such as Osterley Park. The pedestal desk itself also transcended stylistic changes and took on much plainer designs, reflecting the changing taste from rococo to neo-classicism. Both George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton both published their own respective furniture guides, like Chippendale, although no antique desks or other pieces of furniture can be positively attributed to either of these designers.

As was common with 19th century Victorian furniture, the desk tended to be heavier in construction and was revived in many of the styles made popular by the three great 18th century cabinet makers mentioned. The desk was also known as the partners desk, the origins being that two men, or partners, could work from the same desk. With the onset of mass production during the Victorian period, good quality office furniture, like the partners desk, was in high demand.

Epson cartridges of various colors were turned into hanging lamps for practical use.

Ink Cartridge LampWhen one thought about recycling projects, one cannot help but think crude, and that aesthetics will have to be thrown out of the window in favor of a conscious bid to keep cartridges out of landfills and save the environment. These lamps, however, were quite elegant, and one would not really find it out-of-place as it hangs over your dining room or living room, especially if your home has a bit of an eclectic air.

At any rate, not everyone will need a new hanging lamp for the boudoir; if you’re currently living in cramped quarters or already have more than enough hanging lamps, then this other product may be more to your liking. Thanks to a tip from GeekSugar.com, we found this cute desk lamp made out of – what else – Epson ink cartridges. These are from Lowell & Louise at Etsy.com.

Each desk lamp, according to the listing description, has been “carefully cracked open, dremel-ed, drilled, wired up” before being turned into the functional hand-held desk lamp. It can also be used as a hanging lamp or simply placed beside you on your desk. Those who are interested can choose from matte black, cyan, light-cyan, magenta, light-magenta, yellow, light-black, and light-light-black. The lamp already comes with a 6-watt bulb, and replacements can be found easily in hardware stores.
